Modern Treasure – 1969 BP Air Race Short Documentary Film

Simon recently featured on Modern Treasure.

In 1969 filmmaker and amateur aviator Michael Dunk took part in the London to Sydney Air Race. Together with three other men, he flew more than 10,000 miles in a single engined Beech Bonanza. 50 years later the film he made about his adventure was found in an attic.

Watch the film below.

BBC 2 The Repair Shop & The Cine Film Factory

So back in late Summer 2018 we received a call through to our Studio from a desperately frantic sounding young lady who had a list of questions about film, not overly uncommon as we receive many calls about film here each week.

However, this once was slightly different to the norm as after our initial call about an hour later the same young lady hesitantly called again & this proceed to explain more information & that she was calling from a TV production company in conjunction with the BEEB! and that the said piece of film she inquired about had significant issues & needed restoration for the popular BBC2 program The Repair Shop.

The episode that featured our work was Episode 10 Series 4 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000427z

Our brief outline by the production company was that in preparation for Episode 10 Series 4 was that there was going to be the restoration of a Eumig P8 Standard 8 projector however our part in this came that unfortunately a very important standard 8 film belonging to the projector owner had attempted to be projected on said Eumig which unfortunately acted as a film shredder leaving such precious film in various pieces not only that whoever with no name mentioned had rejoined any pieces back together in desperate fashion using sellotape (Please refer to images)

So with arrangements made the said fore mentioned Standard 8 film was hand delivered over to our studio as we were now tasked with the complete ground up restoration & rebuild we even carried transfers of the restored film to Digital to for the Gentleman.

Like many of the restoration projects we take on here we are always keen to keep progressive step by step photos along the path towards its digital journey & this was no different so you will see from the many images on our BLOG the process steps underway.

Of course, being the film expert & professionals we are we still became flattered when such large organisations can only turn to us for remedy through our experience in the handling of such delicate matters.

We are delighted to have many accreditations to our name for some monumental film restoration & transfer works we have carried out over our 15 year span see this link to other works we have digitally photographed restored to digital (Warning Not For The Faint Hearted!)

We hope that in conclusion to our BLOG it demonstrates the magic of the work we can carry out here & believe there is in most cases away around issue`s with film and would always like our customers to approach us to appraise & discuss a way forward with any film you may have.

Vintage 8mm Film Projectors Running in 2016

Vintage 8mm Film Projectors Running in 2016

So this topic we have felt compelled to write a blog on for some time as it is probably one of the most frequent topics to come up in conversation when we are speaking with our Customers about 8mm Cine Film Transfers, and what prompted us to take time away from our very busy Christmas Transfer schedule was a Customer walked in to The Cine Film Factory Studio this Week clutching armfuls of Super 8 Film and a 8mm Dual Gauge Projector frantic as to why they wouldn't play on the Projector anymore (Interesting Photos Below Alert!)

Eumig 8mm Projector Drive Belt 3
Bell & Howell 8mm Projector Drive Belt 2
Sankyo 8mm Projector Drive Belt 1

The objective of the Cine Film Projector Blog is we want to educate Customers on, is the operational running of 8mm Cine Film Projectors Today in 2016 and how these Projectors can potentially damage your precious Cine Films for a number of reasons, Now you may be thinking as you have or may have been told that your projector is a Bell & Howell - Sankyo - Eumig - Prinz Magnon Etc the make doesn't matter, Yes these were good units back in 1970`s however some 40 years later whilst they have been tucked out of the way in the Attic significant deterioration has been taking effect, you then discover your Kodak Kodachrome Super 8 collection alongside the projector in the box and decide great I'm going to get these transferred with The Cine Film Factory, however firstly I want to fire up the projector to see what is on the Super 8 before sending it over to us.

This is where We shout STOP!!! don't do this, you will potentially turn your precious 8mm film in shredded film something that resembles the remnants from a Fellows Paper shredder, which will inevitably render your Film useless to Transfer, this also goes for buying Projectors over the internet on popular Auction Sites where the seller states all sorts about how shiny it is and it looks in good condition for it age Etc Etc Yawn Avoid don't do it.

Firstly there are 2 main issues when powering up Projectors that haven't been used for many years firstly The rubber drive belt will have perished consuming itself with a sticky fungus (See Images from the Projector as mention in our opening to our Blog)

Secondly the once bright 100w Bulb will no longer shine or if it does very soon after accepting power will go pop.

Whilst drive belts & Bulbs can be replaced you then have to consider the Dusts that has attached itself to the inner workings around the greased components/cogs this is where we most commonly find the damage to Film occurs where the cogs no longer turn correctly through the build up of deposits they then snag up the Film.

This is where we come in of course and always suggest leaving the above and don't risk, We have a range of Digital Transfers services we can offer you for your Films if you want to be able to view again before committing to DVDs, our most popular service is to have them transferred to Digital Files with a corresponding numerical key created for you, We can pop them on a handy USB for you to inspect at your leisure on your own PC when have looked and if you decide what and where you would like created to DVDs we retain the same digital back up and a simple call to the cine film factory studio 01903 690543 can organise all of this for you.

Here is a recent Customer order of 8mm Cine Films transferred to DVDs

We at The Cine Film Factory have been have been thinking about writing a Blog in respect of how Film Transferred provides so much in enjoyment to everyone of our Customers who have this done & offers stimulation to others.

Then a perfect example was requested recently which gave us the opportunity to consider this Blog further & for many reasons feel now is the time to share.
Whilst over the years of Transferring 8mm 9.5mm 16mm Film to DVDs & Digital, thought we had heard from listening to Customers requests I.e. Golden Wedding Anniversary - Birthday - Fathers Day all these poignant Days in people's lives!

Then this one day The Cine Film Factory were approached by a Customer & presented with a very unique situation being, a immediate Family member had been involved in a serious accident at work, unfortunately leaving the person in question with significant Brain Damage showing no response of emotion.
With this situation with the legalities & Insurance companies involved there was an argument being played out with the Courts that the person would not have the ability to respond to their surroundings.

The Family were of course ever hopeful that a miracle would come of this terrible situation, We were advised that a therapist had suggested that sometimes sounds and visuals from the past can have stimulation in such situations, this now formed part of the reasoning as to the decisions for Care to be established.
We were presented with a selection of 8mm Cine Films of the person from their childhood to transfer to DVDs at the earliest opportunity, of course from understanding the situation stepped forward to assist as a matter of urgency.
After the Transfer the feedback we received from the family with huge anticipation on our part was delivered that they were amazed and so were the Doctors and care nurses that they had responded and made noises of recognition & cried, the Brain had drawn stimulation from the images recognised from riding a bike as a child, from a horrendous situation came positives & worked and we are told the DVDs of the Transfers are of huge source of comfort to the individual and are played regularly as they provide an early connection in their life that they have digressed to given the situation they are in.
The Family have since located VHS - Hi 8 Media that they have since had transferred to provide further enjoyment all carried out at The Cine Film Factory Studio in Worthing.

We have also since carried out Family Film transfers for families with loved ones suffering with Dementia - Parkinson's & other Brain related problems as the power of personal film collection memories provide so much comfort to remember the early years of life & can also help the memory in certain situations.
We have even carried out Film Transfers speedily for families to comfort those in the late stages of terminal Cancer as a comfort source for final hours even sounds & voices can be of huge comfort.

With all of this in mind want to reach out to anyone who may be able to relate to any of these situations to contact us without delay to discuss the Film Transfers.

Sony is finally saying goodbye to this 40-year-old device

Sony is finally saying goodbye to this 40-year-old device

Betamax

The Betamax was released back in 1975, but it’s only now that Sony has decided to stop selling cassettes for it. When it was released back in 1975, the Betamax kicked off a major format war surrounding video recorders.

While VHS eventually dominated the industry, Sony continued to support its format long after its launch. It had stopped manufacturing the Betamax back in 2002 (having stopped selling them around the world in 1998) but continued to sell the cassettes and offer repairs for existing devices.

Now 13 years later, the company announced it will finally stop selling Betamax cassettes from March of next year, say Engadget. The Betamax was Sony’s attempt to dictate the video recording market, but while it was one of the first video machines to be commercially successful, it sold 2.3 million unit in 1984, it eventually lost out to VHS.

The main reason was because Betamax could only record one hour of footage at a time while VHS could record two or more. While Betamax cassettes were smaller, their inability to record longer shows or movies was a significant flaw. Sony did improve the duration of its tapes, and made the Betamax cheaper, the damage was already done.

If you still happen to use one, then you have a few more months to stock up on cassettes and supplies for it.

8mm Cine Film or 16mm Film Transferred to Digital Files

8mm Cine Film or 16mm Film Transferred to Digital Files

We Need Your Help!

As you may or may not be aware we offer a selection of transfer services here at The Cine Film Factory, however by far as of recent months the majority of our Customers are requesting transfer of 8mm cine film & transfer of 16mm film to Digital Video Files, over DVDs which we call service 2, rather than now what is appearing to be outdated transfer of old 8mm & 16mm to DVD, which we call transfer service 1.

Whilst we offer our digital transfer to digital video files for all media types, this ranges between 8mm cine films - 16mm films - vhs video tapes - vhs-c video tapes - video 8 - hi8 tapes - mini dv etc.

Are your Digital Transfers for Private use only - Social Media - or The Cloud?

We would be interested to know why choose digital video files?
Of course we have our own views on the convenience of transferring old film to digital files however as we seem to find out in the media nothing is ever secure in the digital world,
As this blog is being written we see on the News that Customers of the Ashley Madison Website are having their private information displayed for people to see on the internet.

We know from speaking to our Customers the majority find the convenience of having their 8mm & 16mm films transferred to digital video files rather than dvd offers them flexibility to view their film content via their own personal computers at home, let's remember given the age of some film, these may not have been viewed if at all for many years possibly extending to 10-20-30 plus years.

For many customers we create a key which is assigned to the individual 8mm cine film or 16mm film transfer file, this allows the customer the opportunity to view the transferred films at leisure then come back to us stating which number file they would like to be assigned to DVD-Video, we of course have a back up of the transfers the same as the customer gets so everyone knows what is where.

We have even in the past supplied film we have transferred from the 1920s - 1930s etc onto I Pads for customers, amazing hey! on the other scale imagine going back in time to early 1900s taking an I Pad with your film from this early era, sitting on a bench in a street in a public place whilst watching footage of the current day on the I Pad, could you imagine the reactions of the passersby as to what you are doing.

Well all of the above considered we would love to hear your thoughts on this subject and will share the some ideas you provide on a blog update in the near future.
